Paez is such a hard one to profile, he looks incredible, quick, strong enough to hold on to the ball under pressure, wand of a left foot, beats a man with ease. He just looks a special talent who could well be the future of Chelsea. However, after a while of watching his great skills, you start to take notice of the defending and that is when you realise that it is impossible to tell how good it is.

The defending and the goalkeepers he is up against are, to be nice, nowhere near top level. In the main they are frankly terrible. You have to wonder how he gets so much time and space in attacking areas, and watching him you see he is not having to do anything to create it, the defenders are just giving him it.

Those defenders that do get close to him, their only interest is in grappling, they make no attempt to get the ball, so when he is moving it away from them it looks spectacular, but they are making it easy. Then you look closely at his goals and some are just excellent goals, but some you have to question the keeper. So it does leave questions over how good Paez actually is.

That is why his loan to Strasbourg is going to be extremely interesting, as it will give a better idea of his quality. The lad might be the next big superstar in the game, but this will be the first real test of Paez's credentials in that respect. One thing he will have to improve on is his passing - he does have a tendency to overhit his forward passes.

He has the vision to spot the runs, but he does seem to struggle with picking them out. He does hit a shot with good power, so he probably just needs to work on his subtlety with the ball to stop hitting it so hard every time. Other than that, this season will be the first time we can truly see what Paez is all about, playing against some decent opponents.

Perhaps they have got the global superstar they think they have, or perhaps they will just have another Alexandre Pato, who simply faded away once in European football.
