Jonny Evans is one of the more underrated players of recent times, a quality defender who has now sadly retired. Though, considering the injuries he has gone through, which so adversely affected his career, it is amazing he managed to play on until he reached the age of 37. Those injuries are probably the biggest story of his time in football, not just because they robbed him of so much time, but also because they forced him to change his game to try and avoid them recurring.

If it was not for those injuries, there is a good chance he would have spent pretty much his entire career at Man Utd as he was a favourite of Alex Ferguson while there. Unfortunately, his body was just so unreliable that he was moved on. They did continue to niggle him after moving as well, he was never able to get away from them and they did affect his pace and ability to turn quickly.

Evans adjusted his game to deal with his lack of pace by working on his positioning and reading of the game, which made him a better defender over time. He became a defensive leader for Leicester, as he talked the other defenders through the games, making the whole backline better with him in it. He would marshal what was a very weak defence the moment he was taken out of it, making it into a decent, well-organised unit.

Sadly those injuries cost him so much, yet he still has a whole host of trophies to his name. It just leaves you wondering what if? Evans had so much promise, he was big and strong, but had decent pace and was not slow on the turn, allied to good reading of the game and positional sense. He was also technically good, decent on the ball and good in the air.
