Adam Lallana does seem to be an overlooked member of Klopp's team that won pretty much everything, possibly because he had gradually been moved to the fringes of the team. However, his ability to come on and close out games was key, a bit like they use in MLB baseball, where they have a pitcher whose job is purely to come in late in games to stop the opposition. In his early days at Liverpool, he had been frustrating to watch, the talent was always there, but also the tendency to take 8 touches when 2 would have been perfect.
For a short spell under Klopp, Lallana moved away from that tendency and became a brilliant player, for both club and country, though he never ever stopped doing Cruyff turns for the sake of it! It is all a long way from his youth, when he was an Everton fan growing up, who had said he would never sign for Liverpool while playing for Southampton. That is why his move was one of the bigger surprise transfers I can remember while doing the sites, purely because he had always been so clear on his dislike for the Reds.
He became one of many childhood Toffee fans who went on to become a star at Liverpool, which must make their fans wonder how their own club has managed to miss so many? Back to Lallana though and he was a player who loved to get on the ball and run with it, that was his key strength, he could slalom and twist and turn with the best of them. Unfortunately, he usually missed the right moment to play the pass or take the shot by taking another touch, and then another, and then another, until the moment was gone.
Lallana was not afraid of hard work though, he was always a willing worker, tracking back to help out and would try and put a foot in if the opportunity arose, though he was a bit lightweight in the challenge at times. Sadly injuries and age caught up with him and at the age of 37 he has retired from playing to take up a role on the Southampton coaching staff. For me, he will go down as an excellent player who never quite reached the level he could have by just looking to move the ball on as quickly as possible.
