Gross joined the Premier League last season after being the player who created the most chances in the Bundesliga the previous season, despite his team's relegation. Despite that record, he was a relative unknown when he arrived in England for a small, in relative terms, fee. His fee could have been ten times as large and still seemed a bargain buy, as he showed quickly what made his so effective.
The German has no pace and is not going to beat men on the dribble, that is not how he creates chances for his team-mates. He has an excellent workrate, always on the move, always working to help the team defensively when they do not have the ball and to get into space when they do. His ability to find a pocket of space to receive the ball and give himself a chance to use that space to pick out a team-mate in a dangerous position is exceptional.
Added to that, he has amongst the best end product I have ever seen. His delivery is fantastic. Whether it is a cross, pass, free kick or a corner, it is almost invariably pinpoint. One weakness of his game is his goalscoring, he does not score anything like enough goals considering the quality he possesses with his feet. It says a lot about how good he actually is that I am using that as one of his big flaws. It is amazing that no big bid came in for him over the summer.
